DIY Documentary Mobile will guide you through the creation of a short nonfiction film using only your mobile phone!

Students of all experience levels are welcome!

DIY films can be about anything! Walk the viewer through your quarantine hobby, tell the story of your grandmother through archival material and remote interviews, show us the way the trees in your garden grow, or film what’s going on out in the world—from a safe distance!

In past classes, students have produced films on everything from hauntings to burlesque dancers to fish tanks to learning how to be a mother when you were never really mothered yourself.

You provide the story, we’ll provide technical support and instruction with an emphasis on effective storytelling.

Students will work outside of class to shoot and edit their films. In these unprecedented times, we encourage students to lean into the tools you have available, to make conscious decisions about the look and feel of your film with those tools in mind, and to take pride in the restrictions!

Finished films will screen at a live virtual premiere [date tbd]! Invite your friends and family to attend!

DIY Documentary mobile will be taught by our veteran DIY Documentary instructor Kia Anne Geraths.

Technical Details & Considerations:

  • Students will use their mobile phones to shoot and edit their documentaries. This is not a computer-editing based course.
  • Mobile DIY Documentary will be taught using Zoom video chat. Students will be sent an invite link via email a few days before class begins. Please make sure that your computer, tablet, or phone meets Zoom Meeting requirements, which can be found here: Zoom Tech Requirements
And here you can find tutorial videos on using Zoom: How to Use Zoom
  • We highly encourage students to use the Kinemaster video editing app for their DIY project [pronounced KIN-eh Master]. This will allow our instructor to provide unified instruction and to assist with technical difficulties. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Students should factor in the cost of the app when they sign up for the class. You can purchase 2 months of use for $6.
  • Please be aware that you will need storage space on your mobile phone to complete this project
